Captain Chris “Sunday” Sund Assumes Command of Naval Base Coronado

Congratulations to CAPT Chris “Sunday” Sund, who assumed command of Naval Base Coronado on 04 October 2013. CAPT Sund, a native of Illinois, earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse before finishing Aviation Officer Candidate School in 1989. He earned Naval Flight Officer Wings at VAW-110 in San Diego, CA and served with VAW-117 at NAS Miramar from 1991 to 1994. While attached to the “Wallbangers” of VAW-117, CAPT Sund made deployments aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN72) in support of Operations DESERT STORM and SOUTHERN WATCH.

He then underwent pilot training and received his Naval Aviator Wings in Pensacola, FL after advanced training in the T-2 Buckeye at VT-4. After attending E-2C Fleet Replacement Squadron training at VAW-120 in Norfolk, VA, he reported to VAW-112 at NAS Miramar and served as Safety Officer and Maintenance Division Officer. While at VAW-112, the “Golden Hawks” the entire E-2 Wing moved to their current home NAS Point Mugu, CA.

After a brief tour as Assistant Operations Officer for the Commander, Carrier Airborne Early Warning Wing, Pacific Fleet, CAPT Sund completed his department head tour in VAW-117 as the Administrative and Operations Officer where he participated in Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM.

In December 2003, CAPT Sund transferred to Joint Staff, J-8 Directorate in the Pentagon where he served as Game Director and Action Officer in the Studies, Analysis and Gaming Division.

CAPT Sund served as the Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of VAW-123 in Norfolk, VA from 2006 to 2009. VAW-123 operated the E-2C Hawkeye in CVW-1 attached to the USS ENTERPRISE (CVN65) completing two deployments in support of the Global War on Terrorism. After his squadron commander tour, he attended the Joint Advanced Warfighting School (JAWS) in Norfolk, VA earning a MS degree in Operational Planning and Strategy. He then served at The Joint Staff, J31, in Hampton Roads as a lead planner for disestablishment and transition issues and for the implementation of the Defense Secretary’s Adaptive Planning and Execution initiative. CAPT Sund reported to Naval Base Coronado in June 2012 as Executive Officer.

CAPT Sund has more than 4,000 hours of flight time in the E-2C Hawkeye. We are also proud to note that Sunday serves as a Military Liaison to the VAW-VRC Foundation.
